Win where EFB habits are still being formed.

Ascent’s clearest opening is not “every pilot.” It is the moment when a student begins cross-country planning and has not yet accumulated years of workflow, data and muscle memory in another EFB.

Execution: Mack can anchor a recurring series, but he should be one credible team voice rather than the entire brand.

Operate Reddit and enter existing pilot communities transparently.

A U.S. pilot I interviewed named Reddit, CFIs and flight-school friends as places where pilots exchange experience. Reddit is therefore both a listening source and a channel Ascent can actively earn.

Ask moderators before research or promotion. Build relationships with helpful CFIs, frequent technical contributors, student-group admins, flying-club organizers and local school champions.

Close the feedback loop

Return to the original thread with the result: what the team learned, what changed and what remains unresolved. That follow-up is stronger proof than a polished claim.

Community rule: disclose affiliation, contribute without linking every time, ask permission where required and invite criticism. The product link appears only when it directly helps answer the conversation.

For a safety-critical tool, offline trust can outperform broad reach.

A pilot is not only buying convenience. They are deciding which information tool to bring into a high-workload environment, so a recommendation from someone credible carries unusual weight.

In China, experience exchange was described as heavily offline. In the U.S., Reddit helps discovery, while CFIs and school friends often provide the confidence to try.

Differentiate honestly from mature incumbents.

The case for Ascent is not that ForeFlight and Garmin are bad. It is that their strengths leave a specific opening for a simpler, confidence-first product—if Ascent can prove reliability.

ForeFlight

Strength: deep professional workflow, broad information, large learning ecosystem and instructor familiarity.

Friction: feature density, learning cost, iOS-only access and subscription tiers.

Garmin Pilot

Strength: easier initial familiarity for some pilots, iOS/Android and strong Garmin cockpit integration.

Friction: best value is tied to the Garmin ecosystem; some workflows require more taps.

Ascent

Opening: clear interface, one plan, route/weather/terrain coherence, offline regions and automatic post-flight value.

Burden of proof: young brand, smaller learning ecosystem, iOS only and major AI/safety features still marked “soon.”

The proof experiment: run the same ten routes in all three apps. Compare planning steps, weather interpretation, NOTAM handling, offline survival, chart currency and the pilot’s confidence about what to do next. Publish the honest result—even if it reveals product gaps.
